Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Summer 2014
'Pop-up' cinema for CineFringe, the film festival of the Edinburgh Fringe, which showcases the best independent short films and events at the largest arts festival on the planet.
The project drew on the brand aesthetic and references to folding concertina cameras to create a piece that transformed the location into a cinema worthy of the event. The folded card design also responded to the challenging space requirements for transit from London to Edinburgh and the simple assembly process allowed for easy and quick erection on site.
The project concept was developed with the festival director in order to ensure it was delivered within the tight budget and time frame. It was fabricated during a few days prior to the festival.
Project leader for design and build of festival DJ stage
Client: Standon Calling Festival
Standon, UK, 2013-2015
Project leader for design and build of festival DJ stage for the music and arts festival Standon Calling.
The project emerged after being approached by some of the festival founders who wanted to create their own space to programme for the festival. The shed design was a play on the humble beginnings of the festival - a the birthday celebration of the founder - which has grown to an annual festival for over 5,000 people. The sides of the shed fold down to open the structure up to it's surroundings and increase the capacity.
In response to the clients needs, the design provides a robust structural frame which will last for a number of years. This is clad with OSB board so that any panels that are damaged over the structures life span can be easily and cheaply replaced. The fold down side panels can be secured closed when the stage is closed.
The design of the structure took place over a six months and the construction took place over a period of two weeks before the event.
Design and fabrication of event decor
Kraaifontein, Cape Town, South Africa, 2011
This project used recycled plastic waste to create signage and decorations for a local school event in Kraaifontein, a township outside of Cape Town. The project emerged whilst undertaking a case study on the township under the guidance of a Cape Town urban design firm, Urban Collaborations.
Recycled plastic waste was used in order to reference the waste disposal and removal issues present in many of South Africa’s townships. These often lead to the spread of disease because of blocked sewerage systems and infestations.
Project leader for design and build of arts pavilion
Shambala Festival, Market Harborough, UK, 2012
‘And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.’
- Roald Dahl
Project leader from design conception up to project realisation for an arts pavilion commissioned by the arts and music festival Shambala.
This pavilion offered the experience of being within a kaleidoscope, in a space defined by light, colour and reflection. The exterior of the small shelter was clad in a moving mass of translucent scales and was situated amongst the trees. A sliver cut from the shell revealed glimpses of people lying down, looking up into the eaves of the structure. Once inside, they became part of a room full of radiant colour and moving reflections. Their presence mirrored in the enclosing surfaces that open up to the sky above, blurring the boundary between inside and out. The pavilion was made out of recycled or reclaimed materials – it was an Aladdin’s cave of unexpected treasures.
